I was recently asked an interesting question, “How did you figure out what you loved to do?” The short answer is: it just happened. But here’s the longer answer for those who are curious.
My journey began in the construction industry. I wanted to do CAD drawings for houses, but it didn’t work out quite the way I wanted it to. So I stuck with being a framing contractor.
As a framing contractor I loved the detail that went into trim work. But the job had a lot of downsides. Getting up and down constantly combined with the loud noises and sawdust blowing everywhere would give me bad headaches and nose bleeds.
So I worked my way up in the company, moving from the hands-on, labor-intensive work to training others and eventually owning the company.
If you’ve read my book you know what happened after that. While there were a lot of poor decisions I made back then, what I can see now is where my true passion was: helping people become better in business and in life. All the training and interaction that I had with people in the company that I managed gave me opportunities to teach and help them, which formed a pattern that I didn’t see until years later.
Fast-forward to 2012, I decided that I wanted to do my best to help those around me grow in all ways. When I made that choice to do business from a place of service to others, I did very well financially and the money took care of itself.
Over the years I’ve found that I enjoy commercial development, and a few side hobbies here and there. I’m in a much better place as a person, and finally get to do what I love every day
If you’re stuck trying to figure out what you love to do, let’s talk. As a coach, I take the time to understand not only what you do, but who you are, and have a process to help determine what your passions are.
