When is it Time to Start Doing What you Love?

How did I know when it was time to start doing what I love to do instead of what I needed to do to survive?

This is different for most people. For me it was really intuitive.

But here’s how I came to the realization that I needed to let certain things go to focus more on what I enjoy.

A few years ago I found myself missing home building. After a talk with my wife I decided to start a company. We both thought it was a good idea to work as a team on this so we could have fun and improve our marriage by spending more time together. But what ended up happening was the total opposite! The business became detrimental to our marriage, and after a few years took a toll on our relationship as the day-to-day minutiae created other problems. 

At that point, I realized that this is not what I wanted to be doing, and that what I really enjoyed was helping people, specifically in our brokerage. After realizing that this is where my passion truly was, I made the choice to stop building after the last house was sold. It took 8 months after making that decision for the house to sell and to close the business, but it’s funny how immediately after how many doors opened up to present new opportunities to us. 

Looking back, I could have definitely kept going with the business and would have survived. But ultimately I would not be happy. I’ve reached the point in my life where there are very few businesses I stay in just for the money. When I come from a place of happiness and taking joy in what I do, the money seems to come naturally and work itself out.
