I’ve been in business for a long time, and have heard it all by now! Business owners or realtors will say that they’ve had assistants who keep quitting, or that they don’t have enough time to get organized. And the story remains the same: the excuses keep these people from moving forward or making significant changes in their business.
My thoughts on excuses, are that they simply don’t exist!
Let’s talk about being “too busy.” There is no such thing! Before you get defensive, hear me out. If you’re completely swamped in work, you feel like your wheels are spinning and you can’t breathe from all the tasks you need to get done, the last thing you need is more time. Instead, you need to get organized and manage your time more efficiently. If you can implement structure and organization into your business and personal life, I can guarantee that you’ll find enough time in your day to get everything accomplished in a controlled and easy manner.
1) Get control of your calendar. This is probably the most important tip, because none of the other tips will matter if you’re not blocking your time out efficiently in between your business AND your personal life. Some major blocks you can start with can include:
2) Get structured. You cannot get structured without systems. And if you’re already thinking, “I don’t have time to work on systems” then think of this as a business building activity that you can factor into your daily calendar (from the first tip!). Working on your business is just as important as working in it. And if you’re having trouble figuring out a system, take a look at what others in your industry are doing. It’s almost guaranteed that someone somewhere has a system that works, so save yourself some time and don’t reinvent the wheel. Find a system and make your own version to get the structure in your business that you need.
3) Get a good admin. When people tell me “I can't keep an admin, they keep quitting!” I know the reason why 99.9% of the time. It all comes back to blocking out and making time in your schedule, in this case to train. You have to make it a priority to take some time to help train your admin to go through processes and expectations. I promise you if you take the time to do this, they will have a much higher chance of success, and then will help you create the systems and the structure you need. At that point, you’ll save more time by having them run your systems while you step back into a management role.
We can choose to take control of our lives and manage our time more effectively, or choose to stay in the struggle and hope it works out.
