If you’re a business owner feeling overwhelmed or frustrated with your lack of progress right now, it’s easy to give up and head back to a 9-5. Being in charge comes with enormous responsibility, and it can be frustrating when you're working non-stop and not seeing better results.
But any kind of success takes time, commitment and patience. If you’re at the point of giving up, it's a good idea to take a step back and find simple tasks you can complete fairly easily.
1. Treat your business like a business.
Remember that your business is not a job, and you are not an employee. Your business is actually a lifestyle, and needs to be treated as such. Embrace your role and image as an owner, and get into the mindset of being a business owner. Do you have way too many things on your plate? Do you struggle with delegating? Are you timid when it comes to announcing your role as a business owner to people in your circle? Change your mindset first, and go from there!
2. Create structures and systems
If you're burnt out or feel like you can't breathe from the weight of work on your shoulders, then it's time to create better systems and structures in your business. It doesn't have to be overcomplicated or overwhelming! A system can be as simple as a Google calendar, or as complex as a book of Standard Operating Procedures. But if you need a place to start, think of processes that are ineffective or disorganized, things that end up at your desk unnecessarily. How can different systems in your business run better? How can you use your time more efficiently? Pick one area to change and try instilling a process that makes things run more easily.
3. Get your name out there
Be seen anywhere and everywhere: you need to market yourself. I don't mean you should spam people with your business all day long, but that you should make sure you're properly promoting yourself. Again, this doesn't have to be complicated or cost you thousands of dollars! You can start today. Wear a company hat or shirt as you go about your day. Make sure to have business cards on hand. Post about yourself and what you enjoy about your business on social media. You never know who's paying attention, and who might be interested in what you have to offer. Being more visible will bring you more leads and more business in the long run.
